Chatfield Wikis Chapter 8 Reading Notes

################CHAPTER 8#########################
################CHAPTER 8#########################
LINKING AND CATEGORIZING WIKI
-basic format to be followed thru-out wiki
-prepare links w/ same format and content always maintained in easily recognizable database of categories
-link between pages - easier to find stuff
-easier to see what needs editing
-easier for search engines to find

-LINKING PAGES-
-totally diff than links on web site.
-more powerful - easier to use/maintain
-no complicated code - don't have to have page to create link to it.

-Page names - ea page on wiki needs completely unique name for you to link to it.
-not linking to we address that is already unique
-are linking to database entry w/ only description of that name given.
-clueless about whatever the hell he blathers on about.

-Two types of linking.
1. camelCase linking -simplest
-created by Ward Cunningham when wiki format developed.
-less vesatile.
2. Free Linking - develop links using brackets that allow for case sensitivity, spacing and alternate naming.

1. CamelCase - write name of page out w/ cap letters to delineate start of ea word in chain.
-wiki auto-links to it.
-no spaces
-at least 2 uppercase letters separated by at least 2 lowercase letters
-not considered viable
2. Free Linking - more precise - need special tags
-double brackets Free Link
-links page to exact case match of text entered
-can show text exactly as it would be on your page as the link.
-if link to page doesn't exist - automatically creates page when you save page w/ link.
-pages linked that don't exist will be in red letters in text.
-[[Free Link][This link]]
-or This Link
-will show text on right to link to page on left. -STUB LISTS -
-stub - a link to a page that doesn't yet exist.
-most wiki engines will have list of all stubs, or pages that need to be completed.
-gotta maintain this and make sure no ones is creating endless stubs that aren't going to be filled in anytime soon.
-RENAMING LINKS - may need to rename links that point to page along w/ page in question
-most wikis have tool -
-find under topic actions - then rename or move topic and should be able to change page along w/ all links to page w/ one click.

-linking to outside url's - only a couple of tags
-standard url to website:
-to make into link, do this:

FILES, IMAGES AND VIDS - most engines have uploading tool allows to simply upload and add image, vid or attachment to server.
-then insert it directly into the wiki entry using WYSIWYG editor….buttons avaiable.

-for faster, easier way to do this by linking directly to existing files, gonna use slightly diff links.
-HTML caller -
-HTML CALLERS FOR LINKING TO OUTSIDE IMAGES OR FILES:
1) Images - use IMG SRC tag from HTML
- <img src="file root">
- in space of file root, either enter URL of file found on internet or enter the root space of file on your server to place image from own server into wiki.

2) For Files - for file attachments - HREF tag
- <a href="file root">Text</a>
-has opening and closing tags
-replace the text in the file root spot w/ the location of the attach wanna include and text will appear as link to download file.
-wiki engines provide plug-ins or add-ons that allow visual representations or slide shows for attachments.

3) Embedded Files - vary depending on type.
-tag is: <embed src>
-but gonna need to turn on plug-in in wiki engine to do this.
-generally , simply turn on plug-in and enter url of embedded file…like you-tube video.
-file will then appear where designated in the page

-CATEGORIES AND TAGS - LINKING AND STRUCTURING
-how include own pages w/in categories
-CATEGORIES - collections of pages that are defined w/in category.
-can usually find them pretty easy simply by clicking thru to the category and seeing which pages link to that category.

-ADD PAGE TO CATEGORY MANUALLY -

-link tells wiki that you are creating category link to back link to that collection of pages
-tell which category to back link to and name of current page to include.

-some wiki engines use tags.
-tags more versatile - rank by popularity and list.
-gotta be turned on via plug-in from outside resource.
