CHAP2 - MAKING OWN WIKI - my ass I'm making my own wiki.
-WHAT IS WIKI ABOUT?? -
-RESEARCH - look at other wikis.
-how others use them.
-SEO FACTOR - "search engine optimization"
-public interaction?
-private server or intranet?
-if public, gotta develop site competes w/ similar sites and other Web sites w/ same keywords.
-SEO…see above - focal point of any good web site now. - how high in search rankings wiki appears - depends on topics and how promote it.
-wikis rank well in search eng.
-build from ground to be friendly to search spiders
-keywords built into every page
-interlink w/in selves
-if any success, others link to it as resource.

-ENJOY TOPIC -yeah, like what? "wikis?" - don't have that luxury. "writing?" ditto.

-project managment, task orientation, advocacy, educational resources
-secure wikis
-clsoed networds
-only certain people have access
-been used by engineers and programmers since mid 90's

-project mgement most common use for these - so, these are specialized to make better suited.

-Weddings - wedding planners provide all infor for wedding on web site so all can interact
-easier gift regristry, faster way to update people

-Intellipedia - won't ever see it.
-unique and effective uses of wiki tech.
-started after 9/11 - US Intelligence agencies criticized for not sharing info
-now have simple w/ if have clearance

-need ability to work in small unit of shared knowledge - individs will have trouble adjusting to way it works in workeplace.

COMMUNITY WIKIS - based around a community of individs particiapte in same basic activities.

-able to share resorces, gather together, create easier methods to communicate.
-become almost contentfocused
-concep of providing access to full community instead of single individs.
-often message boards, chat rooms -
-not so much maintaining database as maintaining relationships.

-College wikis - lotsa I-net savvy students - live online - John Hopkins Univ, Ann Arbor - Michigan

-people combine basis of content wiki w/ interaction and relationships of community wiki
-more developed cuz rabid interest
-Marvel Comics Database, Wookieepedia for Star Wars, and WoWWiki for World of Warcraft

-best form research is personal experience.

-research starts w/ users - doesn't end there.
-institute source editing - source must be cited for infor.
-any w/out sources is deleted, and 2 uers gotta verify all edits.
-wiki maintains viability.

-for Process wikis-maintain wiki by keeping simple.
-gotta have admin access to things to make master edits, lock down certain articles, see that content cant be always altered.

-FINDING COLLABORATORS -
-when start, need people. -esp content wikis -gotta do a lot and fast cuz no info means no one visits site.
-need reasons why resource is better than rest and so gotta have starting points.
-some pay for help
-some recruit friends

-content wiki recruitment - bare and empty when start them -
-maybe write 25-30 pages/week for one person
-need 2000 to be consididered to be viable source.
-need 200 or more pages of content to start
-need interconnected right away to start
-so perform effectively in SEO
-so, shows dedication to wiki - then others will be too.
