Chatfield Wikis Chapter 1

WaW -WEEK 4: READING NOTES

didn't know this…inventor WWW -Tim Berners-Lee - '80 - original vision web as 2-way medium.
-all use browser and not to just access info - also to create content, link to content and post content.
-CREATED BROWSER that allows users to create and edit pagers - not distributed.
-STILL DIFFICULT and EXPENSIVE
-after web goes public in 92, Internet goes commercial and commercialization smashes individ interests.
-"NO CONTENT PRODUCERS! ONLY CONSUMERS!!!…..ONLY PRODUCERS, like TV, if have money and tech expertise.

-SO, BIG CHANGE - 99-2000…
-Blogger.com!!
-lesser known stream at time too!
-95, programmer and prof, Ward Cuningham invents THE WIKI.
-releases first software as openaccess.
-not much attention until Wikipedia in 01..
-BUT had been used in programming and higher ed for years b4.

-BOTH are publishing platforms
-BOTH allow anyone w/ browser access to post content - BIG DIFF.

-BIG DIFFS BETWEEN WEBL N WIKIS:
- wikis are hypertexual writing spaces
-entire sites written and assembled by users on the fly
-done from inside out
-no need for web design software uploading, etc.
-can be work of individ, BUT many collaborative and welcome all comers to constant building and rebuilding of site.
-bottom ea page -"EDIT THIS PAGE"
-make poss and encourage notebooks n collabor writing projects, commun projects, commun-written encycloped's, tech assist and help sites.
-ALSO used for essays, collective hypertext short stories/novels.

-WHAT'S WITH THE HYPERTEXT???

HERE……TWO BIG DIFF'S SO SIGNIFICANTLY FUNDAMENTALLY DIFF THAN WEBLOGS OTHER MEDIA:-
!) Wiki supports topical writing -
2) AND afford alternative process of composing to that of paper…..
-page titles on wiki are created as topics rather than file names.
-users lin pages to pages using topics to create…
NETWORK OF TOPICS.

-considered a writing space and I do NOT like that….change process of writing from print based cycle…invention…draft…revise….edit to something else….that looks like this:::

. ThreadMode to DocumentMode by way of RefactoringPages. Wiki writing leads to ReimaginingWriting.

RUNNIN'

WIKIS - simple concept - Jimmy Wales - founder of Wikipedia
- everyone w/ free access to sum of all human knowledge.
"the winners have always written hx. - never the masses - never record -
-wikiped criticized for this failing - for inaccurate - Wales ays is most accurate encyloped in world

-look-out history slant….slanted toward the victors - cyz herer comes cold, hard facts on internet - course of human hx changes for all time.

-WIKI-DEF.
-placed in Oxford dictionary in 07 = related to……
__"a web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions or corrections"
-doesn't mean just useful info or even facts
-wiki wiki web in 95 was fast authroing tool
-can be anything you want.
-teachers to provide students w/ updated projects and keep resources current.
-programmers collaborate.
-businesses.

-IN THE BEGINNING…..WAS….
-'94 - Ward Cunningham - started programming first wiki engine.
-vision to create simple and incredibly easy to use online database where all could work.
-done at time when hoard info and then sell it.
-only logical should streamline sharing of info.
-=NAME WIKI - bus to Honolulu I Airport - Wiki Wiki Shuttle - wiki = fast.

-technical inspiration - Apple HyperCard system =
-allowed users create virtual stacks of cards - these supported links among other various cards.
-simply added idea that you could comment on and add info to any of the other users' cards.
-fullbox of notecards analogy.

-today - wikis are face of collaboration on Internet. BUT most effective uses are closed environments - schools, businesses, communities where organizations put to use for complex tasks.
-monitor schoolwork
-keep track memos
-creating plans

-WHATTAWIKI DOES -
-Cunningham's goal - allow any user to edit or create new content on wiki using simple web browser w/ no add-ons, no software and no special knowledge

-goal of wiki format - TOPICAL ASSOCIATIONS -
-USERS INTUATINVE LINK BETEWEN PAGES MY MARKING UP KEYWORDS AND TOPICS.
-SOFWARE AUTOMATICALLY - catalogs and creates hierarchy of categories from toop to bottom
-<ex>-create for inter-de[artment memo system. - lotsa managers add every week and has all of them from all time - THEN software allow quick and easy methods to catalog memos by date, department and address
-link signed name - so can see who sent memos and how many

-core concept of wiki - contribution may be small, but when publish, becomes part of intricate web of info - all dependent and connected w/ all other info of wiki.
-Cunningham creates concept and develops software - but doesn't clearly define wiki.
-so have hundreds diff uses for software and methods to make a wiki community.
-ORIGINAL FEATURES - AND NOW DEFINITIVE TERMS FOR WIKI CONSTRUCTION:-
1. Central Location - files for wiki gotta be centrally located to make it quick and easy to share and so insure info freely available.

2. Anyone can edit - any can add info to wiki w/out giving up id or having administrator take over.

3. Easy editing - should be able to edit wiki w/ web browser and no special tools or skill.

4. Simple formatting - formatting language gotta be simpler than even HTML - so all can access.

5. Lists of changes - every page has a hx page to show all recent changes and course of diff edits that have been done to page.

-remember - no set group of standards for wikis.

-WAYS THAT WIKIS HAVE CHANGED THAT MADE THEM MORE VITAL FOR USE IN PRIVATE ENTERPRISES/GROUPS:
-1. Private access - can be run on private servers and intranets - allow administrative work in business, school, hospital.
-2. Versioning - storing diff version s of wiki page so if major edit comes in, past changes can be reestablished if need.
-3. Attached files - can be attached to a wiki just like email message to give more stremalined way of sharing infor in collabor system.
-4. backlinks - checks all pages that link to single page. - see how all connected.
-5. Changes alerts - when changes made to pages where you set alerts, can log in and see the change.
-allows experts monitor specific pages
-6. Searching - easier and faster to search wikkis w/ advanced search tech and spidering used to index pages.
-7. Printable pages - ability to switch format of wiki page for printing.

-HOW STARTED - core concept - ANYONE CAN START A WIKI - and ANYONE CAN USE A WIKI.
-nnot til 06.
-wikis not standardized - software very techinical - most people don't have skill set or knowledge to build private server.
-easier to use as visitor instead of administrator.
-this why progrmmers/engineers almost exclusively used wikis and there were VERY few standard app's for them

-more interactive internet - develops at same time as this in wikis.
-hosted wikis now reality
-anyone can use the technology.
-now, to start wiki, only need is basic knowledge of core concepts behind wiki and markup language used to maintain.
-JotSpot, Wikispaces, Wikia and PBworks. - can access almost all tools need to create own wikis.
-before start wiki - better to get idea by using wiki to add to existing wikipage -

-VARIOUS USES FOR WIKIS
1) Big Kid on the Block - Wikipedia - one of largest and most accessed sites on web.
-even above google.
-Nupedia - non-wiki encyclopedia - used more advanced technology and bomed.
-flopped cuz of mindset held to - info not free, so no one used.
-when converted over to wiki….pow.
-simple resource.
-more than 10-million articles around world.

-NEW TERM THAT HELD NO MEANING UNTIL NOW - WEB 2.0 -
-2nd generation of Web development. - used to create and share content in real time.
-"The Direction of Modern Technology."
-ALL ABOUT FUNCTIONALITY AND PARTICIPATION BY USERS.
-WEB 2.0 TECHNOLOGY - where users can upload own videos and share with most of world
- My Space - users are free to communicate, share w/ anyone in world.
-behind-the-scenes, technical body maintains all this.
-BUT….USERS CREATE ALLLLLLL CONTENT.
-Forefronts of Web2.0 - Wikipedia, YouTube, MySpace.
-Wikiped - 266 languages - largest encyclopedia ever assembled - over 10-million articles.
-Wikiped is one of millions of wikis out there.

INTERESTED IN WIKIS - ADDING TO WIKI IS FIRST STEP
-gotta learn use of wiki and what's required
-info should work for about every wiki out there -
-GOTTA BE AWARE OF WIKIPED FORMATTING
-GOTTA BE AWARE OF OTHER STANDARDS PRESENT IN ANY WIKI EDITING.

-to start - most wikis make you register. - to be be exclusive but so all can see who edits content and guard against vandals.
- REALLY know something new/useful?
-HEAR: VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WRAPPED UP IN METHODS THEY WILL OFFER OPINIONS.
-BEAR IN MIND - WIKIS BOTH UNBIASED AND INFO BASED W/ CONSENSUS METHOD OF APPLICATION. - IF PEERS DON'T AGREE, YOUR POST REMOVED.

-HAVE SOURCES AND CITE, CITE, CITE.
-citations - keep other wiki users from rmoving your edits - credibility
-changes you make seen as viable sources of info.

-ALSO - GOTTA LEARN TO WRITE SO ARE UNBIASED. -WIKIS ARE RESOURCES NOT OPINION PITS.
-opinions…forums and blogs.
-factual or at least non-partial examples of info distribution
-OBJECTIVITY
-TRICK/HINT - look for any adjectives, verbs , descriptives that don't fit in academic or educational setting.
-NO best, great, useful, bad, meaningless - bias -

-WHERE CONTRIBUTE - pick right place to share.
-basis of community is those who contribute have knowledge or original perspective to add to core of info

-WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW -PAGE 31 -

-SIMPLEST AND MOST ABSOLUTE THING EVER DO ON WIKI IS ADD NEW PAGE -
-THE CORE OF ALL KNOWEDGE - CRUX FROM WHICH ALL CONTENT DERIVED.
-SKILL SET FOR WORKING ON WIKI:
-navigating wiki
-created/editing new pages - linking pages.

###########USING A WIKI - THE BASICS####################
1 - Navigating a wiki - all a bit diff. diff aspects and engines running. - technology not standardized.
-services like TWiki, Confluence, MediaWiki
-still relatively the same.
-same in appearance.
-PAGE BODY - all contents of page listed within it - usually on right side, directly under a headline of sorts.
-next is listing of Webs or sections of the wiki - "categories" or "folders"
-these are the links on the left side of the page that show page on and what other pages related to this page.
-FINALLY - access to series links that show you tools can use while on page.
-links to edit page, start new page, view changes or hx of page
-lonks at bottom of navigation structure

-GENERALLY - content on LEFT SIDE - split up into categories correspond to given wiki.

2 - VIEWING SINGLE ARTICLE - click on single article and view, lotsa options
-START - review changes hx.
-shows all changes made to page. 3 links at top of article - discussion, hx, and edit page.

3 - DISCUSSION - display any conversations community members currently have about topic
-good place figure how want move forwards with edits and changes.
-if have factions in debate, often ways can discuss and work them out w/out having people constantly editing and deleting wiki content.
-on Discussion page - find each section of article broken down w/ commentary and questions from various members. - your quesitons/comments go here.

4 - HX - hx page shows all the edits ever made to artilce…..can be huge selection of pages and edits
-here can see if what you wanna edit/add has already been done. -will find about every piece of info re: page here.

5 - EDIT PAGE - page where rgo to find and start editing page.
-consist of text editing box wherer can list everything need to start changing contents of page. look more or less like text document -
-will find SLEW of diff tags in text that tell page how to format each bit of text
-below editable text box, find save page, show preview and show changes button.
-may have other tools included from designer of wiki.

6 - SANDBOX - here, you can practice variousl changes for page until get them wherer you wnat
-could take bit of time to get right look down for page.
-save sandbox changes and upload to wiki and go live.

7 - WYSIWYG - options a lotsa wikis where can edit page in this mode
-what you see is what you get.
-make visual changes to page that alter basic format and make easier to adjust how page will look.

-8 - ACTUAL EDITS - click on edit box and go to text box where existing page located -
-first need create profile
-ensures edits are tracked -
-to check what software your wiki uses, check style guidelines b4 making any edits. -
-REMEMBER REFERENCES.
-to start…..create blank page on wiki of choice in sandbox mode - allows practice w/ diff methods editing and changing text.

-MINOR EDITS - if this, be sure to mark the spot on editing page that says minor edit - -shows that have only changed few small things.
-MAJOR EDITS - if do, make sure are correct.
-if just go in and reformat article that's already damn good won't fly.
-to make sure don't overlap edit w/ someone else - use Inuse tag -

InuseInuseInuseInuseInuse
-if see this tag, hands off until edit done.
-MAJOR - edit that changes overall mening of article - even if one word.
-gotta mark as major so those w/ RSS feed on article can review it and consensus reached re: if correct.
-most wikis don't have much in way of guidelines for editing - only suggestions.

BASIC MARKUP LANGUAGE FOR WIKI
-basic markup language for editing wiki

1- Links and URLs - basic format for link - par of brackets on each side of text. In wikis - wanna link all words possible to other articles.
-check that page you link to is right page.
-ok - if wana link w/ word that isn't exact text - like this…wanna link word "Internet" to World Wide Web - use following format - "Wikis are a vital part of …..[[World Wide Web[Internet]] -
-tells page that first part is where to go and second part is what to display on the page - use when word closely related to existing article.
-when makes link, markup automatically makes any text attached to end of link a part of the link
-if want to have text connected that does not link, surround text w/ tags, <nowiki> and </nowiki> - HTML will tell wiki not to link that text.
-if link bit of text to pagee that doesn't yet exist, will say so when click on the link and will appear as red in text.
-all existing links will be blue. - click on non-existing link, most wikis give option to create page by clicking on creat-a-page button
-to create a page, gotta be able to link to it from at least one other page -

-#REDIRECT -
-tells page to redirect whatever the page is to another page -
-can redirect to specific section of page if use another # w/in link itself.
-<EX>- wanna redirect from "the Web" to "internet" but wanna to to "early years" part of Internet, use the following command:……. #REDIRECT[[Internet#Early_Years]]

-may wanna link to page in antoerh language - if come across, need language code for wiki -

-CATEGORIZING - put into categore - fairly easy process -
-add the "category" list before the name of the category wanna use -
-if wanna put article 'bout wikis into Internet category, use [[Category:Internet]]

-CREATING EXTERNAL LINKS -
-if wanna create external - use single set of brackets and make sure have effectively marked w/in text
-if leave bare URL, don't need brackets.
-if wanna use them to link specific word to an external link, need to use this format……
[http://www.link.comTitle] - will link to world title.

-USING IMAGES IN PAGE -will use another set of commands easy to learn.
-most basic way include image - this command - [[Image:image.jpeg]]
-will call up image to display in the text - images called must already be uploaded to wiki - and can do this w/ additional form

-if wanna add "alt" text to image, use this format -
- [[Image:image.jpg|Alternate Text]]

-to give image a caption and have it float on right side of page, use "frame" attribute to push image off to side:
-if wanna do same but use thumbnail size image, replace "frame" w/ "thumb" and image resized to match.
-if don't want captions, use modifier "right" instead "frame" or "thumb"

-OTHER COMMANDS THAT ALTER HOW IMAGE LOOKS ON PAGE -
1-resize image -
- [[Image:image.jpg|50px]] - ALWAYS DONE IN PIXELS
2-Go To description page of image -
- [[:Image:Image.jpg]]
3- Link to image w/out displaying it-
- [[:media:image.jpg|Link Text]]

BASIC FORMATTING
BASIC FORMATTING -

-HEADINGS -
“==“ -add more for each level of heading you wanna add.
“== Heading 1 ==“
“=== Heading 2 ===“
“==== Heading 3 ====“
….etc.

-SPECIAL PUNCTUATION/COMMERCIAL SYMBOLS/MATHEMATICAL CHARACTERS -
….NOT listing that stuff - all begin w/ &
PAGES 43-44 in WIKI RESOURCE book.
—-
OTHER SPECIAL FORMATTING -
-can tell page to ignore formatting w/ the tag:
<nowiki>
-all w/in tag shown w/out any wiki markup
-can tell page to ignore wiki markup and not reformat the text while page still interprets special characters w/ this tag:
<pre>
-put leading space, simple add'al space on page to keep text from being reformatted, use space at beginning of each line - page interprets it accordingly.

-TABLE OF CONTENTS -
-simply create headings on page - wiki generates table of contents to be displayed.
-CREATING TABLES-
-skipped in book

USING WIKIPEDIA - 'operates behind the careful hand of millions of volunteers from around world.
-relies on good nature of volunteers.
-write, edit poorly written, find solid sources.

EDITING/CREATING PAGES -
-need develop good plan for how gonna edit content and what entails
-no orig research - no info w/out sources.

-RESEARCH - one of foremost in world.
-too many diff ways single research tool can be inaccurate - not fully verified - can be changed anytime.
-profs and teachers ban use of Wikipedia for formal research.
-ban and moderating use is easing cuz more teachers w/ techno savvy in workforce.

-cite ease of dissemination as why not serious resource.
